Bunion Q & A

What is a bunion?

A bunion is a bony, often painful, bump that most commonly forms on the inner side of your foot at the base of the big toe. When a bunion forms on the outer edge of the foot at the little toe joint, it’s called a bunionette.

The visible bump of a bunion is the result of changes to the structure of the bones in your foot. It starts with inflammation in the bursa, which is a small, fluid-filled sac in the toe joint.

This inflammation causes the toe to lean inward instead of pointing straight. The misalignment of the toe leads to the formation of a swollen bump that may be red and painful.

What are the signs and symptoms of a bunion?

The most noticeable sign of a bunion is a prominent bump at the bottom of the big toe. You may also experience the following symptoms:

  • Corns and calluses where the first and second toes rub together
  • Swelling, redness, and tenderness around the big toe joint
  • Foot pain that’s ongoing or intermittent
  • Restricted range of motion in the big toe

Without treatment, bunion growth may progress until it becomes difficult and painful to wear shoes and walk. Untreated bunions can also lead to complications like hammertoe and bursitis. Don’t hesitate to call Sports Arena Podiatry Group as soon as you notice bunion symptoms.

What causes bunions?

The exact cause of bunions is unknown. However, certain factors may increase your likelihood of getting a bunion, including:

  • Inherited differences in the shape and movement of your foot
  • Stress or injury to the foot
  • Congenital foot deformities
  • Inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis

Wearing tight-fitting or high-heeled shoes may exacerbate a bunion and make symptoms appear sooner.

How is a bunion treated?

Sports Arena Podiatry Group offers several treatment options for bunions. Depending on your specific needs, treatment may include:

  • Changing to more comfortable shoes with a roomier toe box
  • Padding the bunion
  • Custom orthotics
  • Activity modifications
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen
  • Corticosteroid injections

If your bunion pain and symptoms are severe or if nonsurgical treatments are ineffective, Sports Arena Podiatry Group may recommend corrective surgery.
