Plantar Fasciitis Q & A

What is plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis is ligament inflammation along the sole of the foot. Your plantar fascia ligament is wide, tough, and generally pretty durable, as it absorbs shock from your body weight.

Sometimes, the plantar fascia develops small tissue tears from excessive impact or pressure. These tiny tears cause the severe heel pain associated with plantar fasciitis.

The heel pain often starts in the morning because your plantar fascia tightens during the night and those first steps stretch it painfully.

Why does plantar fasciitis happen?

Some of the reasons for plantar fasciitis are:

Sports

Athletic activities that stretch and strain your plantar fascia, like running and ballet, are common causes. But you may also get plantar fasciitis even if you never get off the couch.

Extra weight

Being overweight, obese, or pregnant are all possible contributors to plantar fasciitis.

Improper footwear

Wearing worn, unsupportive, or ill-fitting footwear can contribute to plantar fasciitis development or worsen a case of existing plantar fasciitis.

Biomechanical foot issues

Foot mechanics can contribute to the condition, too. For example, if you have an unusually high arch that causes you to distribute your weight abnormally, it can strain your plantar fascia.

Prolonged standing

Some plantar fasciitis sufferers stand for prolonged periods for their job, like waitstaff. The continued strain of standing on your plantar fascia ligament for eight or more hours daily can greatly increase your chance of damage and plantar fasciitis.

There’s not always a clear-cut cause, but Sports Arena Podiatry Group can assess your plantar fasciitis and relieve your pain regardless.

How do you treat plantar fasciitis?

Plantar fasciitis often resolves after some simple noninvasive treatments such as:

Exercise

Specific prescribed exercises can stretch your plantar fascia while improving its flexibility. Prescribed exercises can also strengthen the muscles in your foot arch, which helps support the plantar fascia to ease pain.

Night splint

A night splint, which positions your toes toward the ceiling while you sleep, keeps your plantar fascia slightly stretched overnight. This prevents the ligament retraction that normally occurs overnight and can minimize your pain.

Orthotics

Orthotics can also help with plantar fasciitis because they can realign your foot and prevent the uneven weight distribution that’s causing problems within the plantar fascia.

Surgery

For treatment-resistant plantar fasciitis, Sports Arena Podiatry Group may recommend surgery that releases the overly tight ligament from the heel to relieve stress.
